    The cloud module is an embedded Linux computer that is also a wifi router under certain conditions.

    Under normal operation, it behaves more or less like a computer with a wifi radio, except that it communicates automatically with the littleBits cloud. This is pretty much like a service like Instant Messaging or Dropbox, where the software on the computer is in constant communication with an internet resource, and then notifies the user when certain events happen (like when you get a new IM, you get a pop up notification, for example).

    During commissioning, the cloud module transforms itself into a wifi router. This allows the user to connect to the cloud module via a web browser in order to enter authentication credentials for the wifi network that the cloud module will be using in normal mode.

    The heart of the design is the iMX233 system-on-chip, which includes all CPU core, the power supplies, and hardware peripherals like USB, ADC, DAC, etc. At power up, the CPU executes on-chip instructions to read pins 2, 3, 4, 5 and 14 to determine where to look to find the bootloader code. Our device boots off the SD micro card, so it accesses the card via the SSP port. It then configures the hardware, and loads the kernel into SDRAM. After booting, the software application is automatically executed, and normal operation begins. The cloud module communicates via its USB port, which allows it to talk to the wifi radio. User interaction is accomplished via: A tactile switch for user input A multi-color led for indication An ADC connected to the input bitSnap for analog signal input A DAC connected to the output bitSnap for analog signal output The two opamps (U3 and U5) are used for signal conditioning.
